Is D-Mannose safe to take during pregnancy?

by Jeremy
(NL, Canada)

My wife recently developed a UTI during the first trimester. Her doctor prescribed the antibiotic fosfomycin as she is allergic to penicillin. We would rather not use antibiotics due to the potential for yeast infection. She has been taking vitamin C 1000mg daily, drinking lots of pure water, and cranberry juice but there is still a slight infection present. We were just wondering if D-Mannose is safe to take during pregnancy?

Thanks!

D-Mannose is a polysaccharide type of sugar that is found in many fruits with higher levels being in cranberries. It is useful for urinary tract infections caused by E. coli.

In high doses it can cause diarrhea and nausea but it does not have any toxicity issues. It does not have any known drug interactions.

I typically recommend doses of 1000mgs daily when dealing with urinary tract infections.

Being a type of glucose that is found in many fruits, without any drug interactions and possible side effects that are gut related; D-Mannose is more than likely safe to take while pregnant. However, when in doubt you could always consult with your doctor.
