Typically when taken by mouth it can cause diarrhea or stomach pain.

When an allergy is present, consuming black walnut hull may cause asthma, watery eyes, runny nose, eczema, edema, and anaphylaxis.

Walnut oil itself is often used externally for eczema, herpes, skin problems, and dry skin. Its also used in some brown dies, hair tints, conditioners for dark hair, and cosmetics. However, black walnut hull contains a chemical called juglone that might cause tongue or lip cancer, especially if applied daily.

Don't apply black walnut to the skin if you are pregnant or breast-feeding. There is also not enough reliable information about the safety of black walnut hull when taken by mouth if you are pregnant or breast-feeding, so it should be avoided.
