Probiotic foods
by: Dan

I am assuming you are talking about Autism Spectrum Disorder, correct? If so yes, they can be very helpful.

Most people with Autism have large colonies of Clostridium bacteria in their guts. This condition quite often causes constipation issues and sometimes very loose stools or chronic diarrhea.

In the case of constipation, probiotics with enzymes once a day can be extremely helpful. With daily use, after one to three weeks the person will usually have daily bowel movements without any problems. Natural probiotic foods such as yogurt can help as well but because these bacteria do not form new colonies in the gut, they will have to be consumed daily.

For loose stools or diarrhea, fermented foods that contain the yeast Saccharomyces cerevisiae, known in supplements as S. Boulardii, can control this condition. I have a webpage on S. boulardii here if you need more information. Saccharomyces cerevisiae can cause yeast infections so you do have to be careful.
