Is the function of the hull to cushion the seed after falling from the tree or is the hull food to the nut?

This is a question that should be directed to a Botanist. We are more concerned with the health and microbial qualities of black walnut hull.

However, I would think the hull is more for protection of the nut from predators such as birds, squirrels, bugs, etc; than to protect the nut when it falls from the tree.
