How Antioxidants Work in the body and in relation to the most destructive immune system disease in the world, HIV.
The body is made up of molecules, combinations of atoms constructed in a particular way to do a specific job.
The molecules that take part in or regulate processes in your body are held together by the forces between their electrons, which have a sort of magnetic attraction to one another, and fit together based on that attraction.
Many molecules within your body exist periodically in what is called an oxidized state. This means that they have one or more unpaired electrons. They are looking for molecular partners, often at the expense of other important molecular relationships. When they are in this state, they are called free radicals.
These free radicals can react much more with their surroundings, often in ways that are damaging. They can interact with and disrupt many finely tuned processes which are needed to maintain the body.
In some cases, the presence of these active molecules, or free radicals, can be helpful. Cells of your immune system, for example, rely on the destructive power of free radicals and use them as ammunition, discharging them where infection is present in order to kill the invaders. But along with the destruction of unwelcome cells or organisms, there can be damage to nearby tissues and processes your body needs.
In other cases, however, free radicals are simply an unavoidable by-product of body processes -- the leftovers, so to speak, of necessary reactions -- and serve no useful purpose. In these cases they are like static on the radio: they mess things up a little, but the music keeps on playing.
All of this is true for every living body.
Our bodies contain natural substances, called antioxidants, which can gather up and neutralize free radicals, limiting their capacity for destruction. Often there are not enough to do the whole job.
There are stages or circumstances in our lives in which free radicals and their damage are increased. Much of the deterioration we see in aging, for example, results from the presence of an increased amount of these reactive molecules. Our natural stores of antioxidants cannot successfully overcome the increase. In states of illness or infection, free radical presence is also increased and results in many of our symptoms. This is of special concern for people with HIV, in whom the normal antioxidant defense system is compromised.
Alcohol and other substances increase the number of free radicals, and hence the damage they do to the body. We'll talk more about that later, when we look at alcohol and HIV.
What makes all this very important is that, given the chance, the HIV virus uses free radicals to establish itself. Free radicals activate the critical step in the actual copying of genetic material needed to reproduce the virus. And the virus itself stimulates their increased presence. The more we can swamp them with extra antioxidants, the harder it is for HIV to grow.
This has been proven, and is currently the subject of substantial research around the world. We already know:
„h If you add antioxidants to a culture dish in which HIV is growing, activity of the virus is profoundly reduced, and HIV production is inhibited.
„h If antioxidants are removed from a culture dish in which HIV is growing, production of the virus is increased.
„h The amount of certain natural antioxidants is decreased in the blood of people with HIV, and antioxidant levels decrease progressively with increasing illness.
„h The results of some studies suggest that antioxidant supplementation may slow the progression of HIV.
Things that can cause high oxidant levels are:
Foods that zap nutrients, i.e. caffeine, etc
Toxins in environment, home, water, food
Medication resistant bacteria
"It is estimated that every cell of your body takes 10,000 free radical hits to your DNA every day" Dr. Bruce Ames
What does this have to do with yeast infections or good health? The immune system will use antioxidants if they are in a plentiful supply in the body to remove oxidative damage which frees NK cells to destroy virus's, bacteria, and fungi. By also having them in a large supply the bodies immune system killer cells can protect, and repair other areas in the body since they don't have to be so involved in free radical removal. Antioxidants are the great neutralizer against oxidative damage to the cells.
Always make sure your antioxidant supplement you are taking is proven to raise antioxidant levels in the body. You want to see increased levels in blood plasma testing by independent researchers.
New page added to Yeastinfectionadvisor.com website here.
Research for this page was taken directly from my University of Miami School of Medicine class.
One of your fellow readers suggested that I have a larger recipe section on the website that people could refer to for the diet. So I thought it might be kind of cool if everyone would send in to me their favorite recipe and I would add it to the recipe webpage. I think this would help everyone out since the diet can be quite hard sometimes to come up with some variety. So if you would like to contribute just send it to me by email and I will add it to the site :) Thank You!
I am looking into the effects of stress on the body and will hopefully soon have a section up on the website. I know for a fact that stress burns hormones which weakens the immune system, and robs you of energy. It is also most definitely tied to yeast infections in adults, especially women.
I have decided to share some of the things I do to deal with stress and I hope it helps you. If nothing else you are going to get an idea of how I think and my personal view of the mind, body, spirit connection. It will either be very helpful or possibly quite entertaining :)
On 2/04 I awoke with a bad chest cough, itchy dry burning throat, and congested nasal passages. Now mind you I have a history as a child of bronchitis constantly and pneumonia 8 times but haven't had anything in years. I actually do not remember when the last time was I had any chest problems. I coughed up what looked like cotton balls all day long and this continued thru Sat. Sat I increased dose of Ambrotose before bed to 1 tbls and woke up after a restless night a lot clearer. My lymph nodes in my neck are swollen way up on Sun-2/06, although my throat is not red inside? My right kidney hurts as well. 2/07 and 2/08, everyday I feel better and my lungs are getting clearer. 2/09, Slept well but probably not enough, felt rough but by the end of the day felt pretty good. 2 more days to go and I will hit the magic 7 days, I do expect to be well or darn close. 2/11, I am feeling pretty good now. Not quite up to my old self but close. 2/15, its a done deal, I feel great.

ADD drug, pulled in Canada, stays on market in USA
By Julie Appleby, USA TODAY
A day after Canadian officials came to an opposite conclusion, FDA regulators said Thursday that there is insufficient evidence to pull an attention deficit disorder (ADD) drug from the market.
The drug, called Adderall and Adderall XR, has been linked to 20 reports of sudden death worldwide, mostly in children, according to Health Canada. None of the deaths were in Canada.
The Food and Drug Administration says 12 of those reported deaths were in the USA and occurred from 1999 to 2003, a period when 30 million prescriptions were written for the stimulant drug.
Most patients taking the drug are children being treated for hyperactivity, although reports have surfaced of abuse by people who want to stay awake.
Shares of Shire Pharmaceuticals, the British company that makes the drug, fell 10.8% to close at $31.80.
"We are surprised by this action from Health Canada. Shire remains confident in the safety and efficacy of Adderall XR," said Shire CEO Matthew Emmens in a statement on the firm's Web site.
The news follows several other high-profile drug safety issues in recent months, including the worldwide withdrawal of painkiller Vioxx after a study showed a sharply increased risk of heart attack and stroke.
The 12 deaths out of 30 million prescriptions do not exceed what the FDA says it would expect to occur in a group that size. And the FDA said other factors also had to be considered: Five of the deaths occurred in patients with underlying heart defects. Another involved a child subjected to high temperatures, vigorous exercise and dehydration, said Robert Temple, an associate director for medical policy at the FDA.
The deaths occurred in children who took the drug for as little as one day and as long as eight years.
"We looked at these data about six months ago, and we just don't think you can conclude the drugs are doing anything," Temple said. "If the evidence isn't good enough to make a case that there's a real risk, it's not a service to people to take the drug away."
In August, the FDA added a warning to Adderall's label, saying people with underlying heart defects had an increased risk of sudden death.
Adderall, an amphetamine, is in one of three classes of drugs used to treat ADD. Another class, also stimulants, is methylphenidate products, such as Ritalin or Concerta. The third is non-stimulant Strattera.
Seven deaths over five years have been reported among patients using the methylphenidate products, the FDA says.
Doctors and other medical experts cautioned patients not to suddenly stop taking Adderall and to talk with their doctors about their concerns.
